There are questions greeting the recent regular destoolment of chiefs under the Asantehene, whether there are more bad Chiefs or they are victims of circumstances?
Just yesterday, August 26, 2024, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has destooled yet again some 3 chiefs. They are, Gyaasihene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene of Sabronum, stripping them of their titles and responsibilities.
The destoolment is a direct result of their involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey‘, a practice that has plagued the region and gradually turned all their water bodies to brown.
The Asantehene’s move though sends a strong message that the palace will not tolerate such activities, which pose a significant threat to the environment and the well-being of its citizens, is raising many questions.
The ‘Galamsey’ menace has been a persistent problem in the region, with many chiefs and community leaders facing criticisms for their perceived complicity or inaction.
The Asanteman Council has been under pressure to take decisive action against those involved in the practice. And all eyes are on the palace to see the way forward in fighting the illegal mining activities under the jurisdiction of the Asanteman Council.
