‘Africa’s Response to Mpox will benefit the Continent and the World’ - Infectious Disease Specialist

A Durban based Infectious Disease Specialist says African countries need to come together to strengthen the continent’s response and to prevent the spread of mpox.

That’s according to Doctor Richard Lessels from the Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

As of August 18th, the total number of positive cases recorded in South Africa stands at 24. Three people have died. The majority of the cases are in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Lessels says a co-ordinated African response will benefit not just the continent but the rest of the world.

“The best way of dealing with outbreaks is to prevent them in the first place the reality is we’ve neglected mpox as a problem in Central Africa and West Africa. Yes, we need to be committed to supporting the countries that are most affected to do that out of solidarity but to prevent us ending up in a worse situation here in this part of the region.”
