(Health): 'Nigeria's Stillbirth Rate Second Highest in the World'

Nigeria ranks second among countries with high stillbirth rates in the world, according to experts from the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN). The burden of stillbirths in Nigeria is over 46% per 1,000 births, and one of the root causes is the underutilisation of data on registered stillbirths for decision-making.

The Stllbirths and Decisionmaking and Planning project, (SPEED), being implemented by the International Research Centre of Excellence of the IHVN, is working to translate data on Nigeria's stillbirths into government policy.

Stillbirth is when a baby is born without any signs of life at 28 weeks of pregnancy or more.

According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Nigeria has the second highest stillbirth rate in West and Central Africa, with 36.2 stillbirths per 1,000 live births.
