Mr. Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian Prime Minister, has died at the age of 86. The billionaire media mogul turned politician had been suffering from serious health problems and had received treatment at a hospital in Milan.
The businessman, who created Italy’s largest media company, Mr Berlusconi also transformed the country’s political landscape, serving as prime minister on four separate occasions.
He was re-admitted to Milan’s San Raffaele hospital over the weekend, for what were described as scheduled medical checks.
Mr Berlusconi had suffered from a range of health problems in recent years, including a lung infection linked to leukaemia.
He had open heart surgery in 2016 and had been sent to hospital several times since contracting Covid-19 three years ago.
Mr Berlusconi served as Italian prime minister in four governments between 1994 and 1995, 2001 and 2006, and 2008 to 2011.
His Forza Italia party is part of the country’s current governing coalition, though Mr. Berlusconi does not have a direct role in government.
