No deaths or significant damage to properties have been reported following a 5.0 magnitude earth tremor in Johannesburg. The epicentre was believed to be around Alberton and Boksburg in East Rand.
The earthquake is believed to have lasted a few seconds and was felt in regions as far as Pretoria and other provinces. According to Times Live, the Council for Geoscience is investigating whether mining activity or fluctuations in groundwater levels may be responsible for the quake.
