Somali forces on Sunday through to Monday, November 28, 2022, stormed the Villa Rose Hotel, which was under siege by the Al-Shabab extremists. The hotel is a popular venue for senior government officials and parliamentarians located a few blocks from the offices of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud.
The siege lasted for 18 hours, and the Somali forces were able to rescue 60 people unhurt and all the 6 al-shabab members were killed. And one member of the security forces was also killed in action. This was disclosed by the police's spokesperson, Sadik Dodishe.
According to Dodishe, 5 of the attackers were killed by the security forces and one blew himself up. The group claimed responsibility for the attack on their radio frequency. Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-affiliated group has been trying to overthrow Somalia's central government for 15 years now.
This new attack comes as the Somali president, elected in May 2022, has decided to commit to a three-month "total war" against the Al-Shabab.
The African Union Forces in Somalia (Atmis) condemned the attack and commended on Twitter the Somali forces for their swift response to prevent further casualties and destruction of properties.
According to the UN, at least 613 civilians have already been killed and 948 injured in violence this year in Somalia, mostly caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) attributed to Al-Shabaab. The highest figures since 2017, up by more than 30% from 2021.
