Mahama Predicts Ghana will Elect its first Female President in the near future

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed a strong belief that Ghana will at some point elect its first female head of State, marking a historic shift in the country’s political leadership.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing, China, on Monday, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping in partnership with UN Women, Mr Mahama expressed confidence that the country will make history by electing its first female President.

“I am confident that, in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling and that a woman will be president of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

The event, which commemorated 30 years since the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality, brought together world leaders to reflect on progress and chart the way forward.

In his address, Mahama acknowledged global efforts towards gender equality but was candid about the continuing challenges.

“Yet, as we review its implementation, persistent gaps and structural barriers continue to slow our collective march toward equality,” he said. “We must therefore act with even greater resolve and innovation.”

Highlighting Ghana’s commitment to this agenda, Mahama reaffirmed the country’s dedication to empowering women and achieving gender parity across national institutions.

“Mr President, my country, Ghana, remains steadfast in its pursuit of gender equality and the empowerment of women,” he affirmed.

He affirmed that the promotion of women into senior leadership roles in Ghana is not a matter of tokenism, but a conscious and strategic effort to entrench gender equality in national governance.

“These are not symbolic gestures; they are a deliberate affirmation that women deserve a seat at the highest levels of decision-making,” he added.
