The Constitutional Council of Chad has upheld the results of the December 29, 2024, parliamentary elections, declaring the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) party of transitional president Mahamat Idriss Deby the winner, despite opposition allegations of fraud and low voter participation.
Opposition leaders, including Clement Sianka of the National Assembly of Democrats, allege widespread irregularities, including ballot stuffing and intimidation by government forces, and are calling for the elections to be annulled.
The country's Constitutional Council announced that MPS had won 124 seats in the 188-member National Assembly.
According to the opposition, the polls, the first in over a decade, should be annulled because most of Chad's 8.3 million voters boycotted the vote. They added that no indication was given that the elections would be free, fair, and transparent since civilians knew Deby wanted power confiscated.
The upcoming senatorial elections in April are expected to conclude the transition to civilian rule, but tensions remain high, with opposition leaders accusing election management bodies of bias and manipulation.
