Rwanda Rolls Out WHO-Approved Preventative HIV Drug

Rwanda is set to roll out the long-acting injectable PrEP known as cabotegravir (CAB-LA).

PrEP refers to the use of antiretroviral medication by HIV-negative individuals to reduce the chance of contracting HIV. The first two injections are administered four weeks apart, followed by eight injections every eight weeks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) published new guidelines in 2022 regarding the use of CAB-LA as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV. The organization urged countries to consider this safe and highly effective prevention option for people at substantial risk of HIV infection.

About 230,000 people are living with HIV in Rwanda, and 96% are aware of their status, while 98% of those who know that they are HIV positive are undergoing antiretroviral treatment. Rwanda has achieved significant success in managing HIV/AIDS, having reached the "95-95-95" target set by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
