Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has called for maximum unity and loyalty within the party as it faces the departure of key members.
Last week, the party’s deputy president and Malema’s longtime friend, Floyd Shivambu, defected to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, along with Mzwanele Manyi, raising concerns that more members may follow.
Addressing the party’s Gauteng Ground Forces in Soweto on Monday night, Malema urged members to be vigilant against those he accused of betraying the party’s struggle and undermining its mission.
Malema stated, “It is now time to build an iron wall in defence of our movement as we confront not only our historical enemy but those amongst us who wish to see the death of our revolutionary movement. We must unite and close ranks against any and all elements who want to destroy the EFF. We must guard against opportunism, factionalism, greed and all attempts to destroy us from our generational mission.”
Malema also challenged those considering leaving the EFF to do so immediately, emphasising the party’s commitment to strengthening its ranks and isolating individuals he believes are using the party for personal gain.
Regarding the Government of National Unity (GNU), which the EFF is not part of, Malema declared it an enemy of the party. He noted that those who recently left the EFF had advocated for joining the GNU.
Malema questioned the strategy, saying, “They said we must join the GNU, the DA and Freedom Front Plus will walk away. I asked them the same question that I asked even during the negotiations, ‘If we go into the GNU, the DA doesn’t walk out, what do we do?"
