Madagascar's election commission has announced the re-election of President Andry Rajoelina following the first round of a ballot boycotted by nearly all opposition candidates, Deutsche Welle reports. Rajoelina, 49, became Africa's youngest head of state in 2009 when he took power on the back of a coup.
Previously, voting closed after the first round of Madagascar's presidential election on Thursday November 16, which took place despite a boycott by most opposition candidates. Reuters reported that the election unfolded peacefully with a low-key security presence across the capital Antananarivo but turn-out was low. Vote counting has begun.
Ten of the 12 opposition candidates running against Andry Rajoelina had led near daily, unauthorised marches in the capital, Antananarivo, for more than a month to protest against the elections.
