(Crime): Israeli’s Most Wanted Fugitive is expected to be Extradited to his Home Country

The man, 46, has been sought by the Israeli government on charges of murder and attempted murder. He is the leader of a gang linked to a criminal organisation in Israel called the ‘Abergil Organisation’.

But he has been on Interpol’s Red Notice since 2015, said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane. In 2019, the South African authorities received an extradition application from Israeli authorities.

The Israeli national was arrested at a Bryanston home. He was nabbed together with seven people during a multidisciplinary operation by Interpol and various units of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

He appeared before the Randburg Magistrates Court on Friday. This was for the extradition process to begin, said Mjonondwane.

“The accused will be back in court on Monday, 21 November 2022 for the State to join the remaining seven suspects in the criminal case against the Israeli. He faces charges of possession of drugs, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as possession of prohibited firearms.”

According to the Israeli government, the fugitive is part of a notorious drug-trafficking gang. It is alleged that the gang also commits extortion and other criminal activities.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said the wanted suspect allegedly placed an explosive underneath a car in two separate incidents. These incidents happened to the same person in 2003 and 2004.

Due to the first explosive, five people suffered serious injuries. They all miraculously survived, said Mathe.

“In the second incident, the suspect also attempted to do the same with the same victim, where he placed a bomb on top of a vehicle. In this incident, three people also sustained serious injuries.”

The Israeli was found with 12 firearms including five assault rifles and seven pistols. 40 000 US dollars were found and three suspected stolen motorcycles.
