The Free State student who allegedly stabbed a physical science teacher to death will not be writing his matric exams.
Simphiwe Mondli, 20, allegedly attacked and stabbed 35-year-old Matefo Mphosela at her residence in Soutpan on Thursday night 20 October.
Mondli made his first court appearance and also asked for an opportunity to be allowed to write his exams through his legal aid appointed lawyer.
Free State Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba stated that the Brandfort Magistrate’s Court denied the 20-year-old’s request to be released in order to write the exams.
The State reportedly opposed the request saying other learners will experience further trauma if they sit for the exams together with him.
The 20-year-old who is currently in police custody was adopted by the late teacher and they lived together in her residence, reportedly.
As previously reported, Free State Education MEC Dr Tate Makgoe said they were devastated by the incident which has left educators and learners in a state of shock and distress just days before the official start of the 2022 Grade 12 examinations.
The principal of the school Mr Nameng Sehloho described Mphosela who taught Grade 10 to Grade 12 learners, as well as natural science to Grade 9 and Grade 10 learners as a very hard working and committed teacher.
Quoting him, “In 2019 she gave us 85%, 2020, 82% and last year 84.2% in physical science. We have lost a consummate educator, a fountain of knowledge and a paragon of a noble teaching profession,” he said.
