The war in Sudan is not only killing today, but it could also condemn future generations to decades of poverty and underdevelopment. Since fighting broke out in April 2023, more than 150,000 people have been killed and almost 15 million displaced, and millions are going hungry and do not have access to safe water and sanitation.
A UN Development Programme and Institute for Security Studies assessment warns that the conflict has reversed years of development, disrupted education and healthcare, damaged the economy and pushed seven million additional people into extreme poverty in 2023 alone.
Sudan's GDP per capita in 2043 could remain below its 2023 level, while a prolonged war until 2030 could push another 34 million people into extreme poverty. Yet the outlook is not irreversible. A scenario in which the war ends this year and investment in education, health, infrastructure and governance improves could lift 17.3 million more people out of extreme poverty by 2043.
