Joshlin Smith’s Kidnapping Trial Resumes with witness Testimony

The Joshlin Smith kidnapping and human trafficking trial is expected to resume in the Western Cape High Court sitting in Saldanha on the Cape West Coast today.

Shocking testimony emerged last week, including that the child’s mother allegedly sold her for R20 000.

Kelly Smith, her boyfriend, Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn, are on trial.

The seven-year-old disappeared from the Middlepos informal settlement on February 19, last year.

Dropping a bombshell in court on Friday, a former accused who turned state witness, Lourentia Lombaard, testified that a day before the little girl went missing, Kelly Smith told her she had sold her to a sangoma for R20 000.

Lombaard said at that time, Smith’s co-accused Steveno van Rhyn was also present.

She says Smith then offered to pay both of them hush money.

Lombaard testified that on the morning of February 19, before Smith left for work, she told Apollis that he must keep the child ready at two ‘oclock because the people would fetch her at that time.

She also saw Smith packing some of the little girl’s clothes into a black cooler bag.

Lombaard is expected to continue testifying today.
