Why the U.S. Exit from the World Health Organization Matters

President Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. would leave the World Health Organization after accusing the global health agency of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises.

According to Trump, the WHO has failed to act independently from the "inappropriate political influence" of WHO member countries and has required "unfairly onerous payments" from the U.S. that are disproportionate to those provided by other, larger countries, such as China.

The WHO said that it regretted the move from its top donor country. "We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe," reads the statement.

During Trump's first term, he attempted to withdraw from the WHO, but Biden reversed the decision.

Many experts believe the departure of the U.S. is likely to compromise programs across the organization, including those tackling tuberculosis, one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases, as well as HIV/AIDS and other health crises.
