The Malian media regulatory body has objected to "disparaging remarks and false accusations" made by a military analyst on the French private news channel LCI. The authorities suspended the network for a period of two months following the broadcast of a program titled "Wagner Decimated in Mali" - a reference to the Russian-backed military group that recently suffered heavy defeat at the hands of rebels in the country.
Since the country's military Junta broke its long-standing alliance with former colonial ruler France, and established closer ties with Russia - and the infamous Wagner mercenary corps - it began a clampdown on foreign media. In April it permanently suspended RFI and its sister television station France 24.
