(Politics): US Pushes Sanctions For Gabon In Reply to Junta Takeover

The U.S. has announced that it is pausing certain foreign assistance programmes benefiting the Gabon government, while it evaluates the unconstitutional intervention by members of the country's military.

The military junta in Gabon led by General Brice Oligui Nguema has set a two-year transition period to democracy and military cooperation with France. He has appointed former opposition leaders and key figures from the ousted regime to both houses of parliament.

Gabon's Interim Prime Minister Raymond Ndong Sima, said he wants to remind the world that by seizing power, the military saved the central African state from a civil war.
