(Politics): Rights Activists Concerned as UN Closes Human Rights Offices in Uganda

Human rights activists has raised concerns after the closer of the United Nations Human Rights Office in Uganda on Saturday, August 5, 2023.

On February 3, 2023, the government said that some of the reasons for the closure include prevailing peace, coupled with strong national human rights institutions and a vibrant civil society, with the capacity to monitor, promote and protect human rights in Uganda.

However, according to human rights and political activists, the closure of the office will have lasting implications on the country and raises apprehension about the future of human rights protection and oversight in Uganda.

The Kampala office was established in 2006 to focus on the human rights situation in conflict-affected areas in north and eastern Uganda but was later expanded to the rest of the country.
