(Gen. News): 2023 Klikor Kli-Adzima, Mama Vena Cultural Festival, the Pride of Tradition

The Klikor festival is celebrated every year in August and this year’s started about two weeks ago and today, August 10, 2023, is part of the final phase of the festival. The festival is celebrated to mark the beginning of a new year and pray for the protection and blessings from the Gods.

This is where the yearly communion is given to participants who are well prepared and pure. The communion is made with wheat and maize, which are mostly from the harvest of the previous year.

Klikor is a town in the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region of Ghana. Though part of the Anlo Traditional Council, it has a paramouncy led by the paramount chief, Torgbi Addo VIII under the Klikor Traditional area. And the spiritual leaders are very instrumental in governing and leading the town, including Fianugor Womegbeameo.

The main occupations of the indigenes of this town are farming, weaving, salt mining, trading and Kente weaving. It is a fairly cosmopolitan town with people from all tribes, regions and countries settling there.  And this is always seen during the festival where people from all walks of lives and nearby countries come for prayers and spiritual cleansing.

There are normally 3 major shrines that take part in this festival. But only two are taking part in this year’s festival; Torgbi Adzima’s Shrine and Mama Vena’s Shrine. Torgbi Adzima is the male and Mama Vena is the female. And the festival is always led by Fianugor Womegbeameo, of Torgbi Adzima’s Shrine, who is the High Priest and leads all rites, sacrifices and processions into the sacred forest for the rituals to be performed.

The festival is for thanks giving for the new year and requests for bumper harvest, good health and prosperity throughout the new year. Participants in this festival also make their personal prayers and promises to the Gods. And is only men that go to the sacred forest because of some spiritual reasons.

Before one takes part in the procession to the forest, he must be pure and at least abstained from sex for some clear days. This is to ensure some level of purity and holiness.

Those who committed murder or heinous crimes in the past are not allowed to take part in the festival. You must be at peace with yourself and neighbours if really you want to tap into the blessings associated with taking part in this festival.

Additionally, you must not use soap the day for the procession into the sacred forest.

There are many activities that precede the festival and some during the festival; they are, “Bli-tsortsor, Ahafafah, Ahadede, Balili,” among others.

Though women do not take part in the procession into the sacred forest for some reasons, they normally do their prayers during the process of “Balili”. Where they make their prayers as they refurbish the “Eflo xor”.

As this year’s Klikor Kli-Adzima, Mama Vena Cultural Festival is coming to an end, we wish the good people of Klikor a very great new year.
