(Politics): Crucial By-election in Ghana as Assin North Constituency’s residents choose a new MP today

The people of Assin North Constituency in the Central Region, Ghana will vote today to elect a new Member of Parliament. This was because the Supreme Court of Ghana ordered the speaker to expunge the name of the previous MP, James Gyakye Quayson of NDC out of parliament’s records after it found that he held dual citizenship at the time of filing his nomination forms to be the MP for the 2020 election.

Three candidates are vying for the seat: James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

The constituency has been grappling with political uncertainty due to the legal challenges faced by its former Member of Parliament, James Gyakye-Quayson, who still has pending cases in court.
