(Politics): Boris Johnson would have Faced 90-day Suspension for Misleading MPs over Partygate Scandal

Boris Johnson would have faced a potential 90-day suspension from the House of Commons if he had not resigned as the Privileges Committee concluded he deliberately misled MPs over Partygate.

The committee published its long-awaited report this morning, Thursday, June 15, 2023, and it said: “We conclude that when he (Mr. Johnson) told the House and this Committee that the Rules and Guidance were being complied with, his own knowledge was such that he deliberately misled the House and this Committee.”

The committee said it would have recommended a suspension of 90 days if the former prime minister had not quit as a Tory MP last Friday.

It said that “if he had not resigned his seat, we would have recommended that he be suspended from the service of the House for 90 days for repeated contempts and for seeking to undermine the parliamentary process”.

Mr Johnson labelled the report a “charade” and said its publication represented a “dreadful day for MPs and for democracy”.

In a 1,700-word statement, the former prime minister claimed the report was “intended to be the final knife-thrust in a protracted political assassination”.
