(G. News): Narrowing Press Freedom Pushing African Journalists into Activism

Africa's shrinking space for press freedom and a growing mistrust in state institutions are pushing some journalists into activism. In most African countries, journalists and media organisations are faced with numerous challenges including government censorship, restrictive laws, and harassment. As a result, journalists take a more active role in advocating for change and defending human rights.

This was discussed in a debate that explored where to draw the line between journalism and activism at the 77 Percent Street Debate in German public and state-owned international broadcaster Deutsche Welles' Global Media Forum. Journalist activists have faced threats and retaliation from authorities in some countries.

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas popularly known for his corruption exposés in Ghana, said that journalism should go beyond just reporting the news, challenging the status quo and promoting social justice.
