Ghana’s governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) declined a request by the opposition to back a bid to remove Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, but said it would continue to push for his dismissal. Which is still not clear when the President, Nana Akuffo Addo will take that personally difficult decision.
The opposition National
Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this week, through their whip, Muntaka
Mubarak urged members of the NPP to support its motion of censure against
Ofori-Atta after more than half of the ruling party’s members of parliament
last month called for the minister to be fired.
Lawmakers began debating
the opposition motion on Thursday afternoon. And despite all the majority NPP
MPs want him out, they don’t want to support the minority’s motion. The minority
members have the optimism that when a secret ballot is called on the motion,
Ken Ofori-Atta will fall.
The speaker then
referred the matter to 8-member ad hoc committee. Presently, the fate of the
Finance Minister is hanging in the balance.
