The earthquake that struck the island of Java, Indonesia on Monday, November 21, 2022, has killed at least 268 people, according to reports from the country. The quake also caused significant damage to the town of Cianjur, near the capital, Jakarta.
According to Reuters, the fatalities increased and as of Wednesday morning, many children were among 268 that are dead, while 151 persons are still missing. Thousands of buildings have been destroyed by the landslide.
The head of the Disaster agency, Suharyanto told reporters that more than 1,000 people had been injured, 58,000 displaced and 22,000 houses damaged.
President Joko Widodo also travelled to Cianjur on Tuesday to encourage rescuers as they continue to search for survivors in rubbles. “My instruction is to prioritise evacuating victims that are still trapped under rubble,” Widodo said.
