"The Beauty and the Crime"! A Botswana Lady, Lesedi Molapisi who was reportedly arrested for drug smuggling in Bangladesh was set to be executed on Friday, November 25, 2022.
The 30-year-old from Ramotswa in Botswana was reportedly arrested on arrival at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka in January this year. She arrived on a Qatar Airways flight from Johannesburg in South Africa, which came via Doha. The Botswana national was allegedly caught with over 3 kg heroin concealed in her luggage.
At the time of the arrest, news reports in Bangladesh quoted Deputy Commissioner of Customs, Sanuwarul Kabir saying; “We have information that cocaine is being smuggled but officials from the Department of Narcotics Control primarily confirmed that the seized item is heroin. We will send the samples for laboratory tests.”
Bangladesh is one of the countries in the world with strict laws regarding drug offences, especially given the country’s ongoing battle with drug infiltration. It prescribes for anyone caught illegally cultivating, producing, transporting, exporting, or importing heroin, cocaine, and cocaine derivatives drugs in excess of 25 grams or millilitres to be executed.
Confirmed reports from the country suggest that Molapisi’s execution date had been set as she had already been tried and sentenced.
