River
Ethiope, the Mysterious River that flows from a tree in Nigeria
The famous River Ethiope is located in Delta State, Nigeria. This river is said to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa. Whilst most rivers flow from rocks, river Ethiope flows from the foot of a silk cotton tree in Umuaja, Nigeria.
This river is believed
to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa. The river Ethiope has become a
tourist center due to the mysterious things it harbours. It has some few fishes
swimming in the transparent river but they run away once they see human beings.
The river Ethiope has
some spiritual affiliations that are linked to the source of the river. Due to
this reason, visitors are not allowed to go close to some parts of the grove
that surround the source of the water. There is also a shrine called the Onoku
shrine, which is the surrounding of the huge silk cotton tree. Red and white
clothes are wrapped around it.
There have been claims
that the river goddess is known for drowning recalcitrant non-indigenes in the
community. The tree has never been cut down nor trimmed. And it is believed that
any such attempt shall result in a catastrophe.
It is really strange
and mysterious for water to be coming out of a tree and forming river that
moves to far distance without affecting the tree in any way. Until something
else happens, the mystery of water flowing out of a tree to form the great Ethiope
river remains one of the mysteries in Africa.
